Hello friend – welcome to the page!
I’ve created this page to contribute, in my own small way, to the connection between Geraldton Newspapers and readers. Specifically, here’s what I’m hoping to do!
1) Provide a direct line between myself and anyone who wants to have a chat. If you want more detail on a story I’ve written, let me know! If you’ve got any questions, ask away! If you want to give your take on something in the paper, go right ahead! Even better, if there’s something happening that you think the paper should cover, no matter how big or small it is, don’t hesitate to give me the lowdown and I’ll take a look into it.
2) Help fulfill what I think of as a public responsibility and obligation by making my job more transparent. Journalists are the means by which society gets accurate, objective information, which is vital to holding an informed opinion, and even to viewing the world around you. Because of this, I think of journalists as being, above all, public servants, doing a job that everyone should be able to scrutinise. Without this page, I’m tucked away in an office and you end up, for the most part, simply being on the receiving end of what I write – however, on this page, we’re all share a common ‘space’, so that (hopefully!) what I write and what you read can become more orientated toward grassroots engagement, with a much higher level of accountability than if I was just some name on a byline that you see now and then in the paper.
On top of this, I’ll also post a fair bit of general musing and reflection relating to the job, so that you’ll get some impression of what it’s like to be a journo. It might be useful and interesting, it might be tedious and boring, but it certainly can’t hurt to put it out there.
Thanks for stopping by – hope to hear from you soon!
